Technical knowledge:Introduction to the EMC Laboratory Site: Electrostatic Discharge Immunity (ESD) Chapter

Electrostatic discharge immunity testing is used to assess the tolerance of electrical and electronic equipment when exposed to electrostatic discharges from operators or nearby objects. This test simulates the electrostatic interference that may occur in actual use to determine whether the equipment will experience functional abnormalities or damage, ensuring that it complies with relevant electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards.

I. Test Objectives
Evaluate the anti-interference performance of electrical and electronic equipment when subjected to electrostatic discharge, including direct discharge from the human body and discharge to adjacent objects, to ensure the stable operation of the equipment in a real environment.

Ii. Test Environment
01. Climatic conditions
Ambient temperature: 15℃ to 35℃
Relative humidity: 30% to 60%
Atmospheric pressure: 86 kPa to 106 kPa
02. Requirements for equipment layout
The test equipment (EUT) should be arranged and connected with cables in accordance with the actual usage requirements.
The EUT should maintain a distance of no less than 0.8 meters from the laboratory walls and other metal structures.
The discharge circuit cable of the electrostatic discharge generator should be connected to the grounding reference plane, and the excess part should be placed in a non-inductive manner.
• The coupling plate should be connected to the ground reference plane through a cable with a 470 kΩ resistor at both ends.

Iii. Testing Principle
The electrostatic discharge generator simulates the electrostatic charges carried by the human body.
The electrostatic energy is directly injected into the contactable metal parts of the EUT through contact discharge.
Or quickly approach and come into contact with the EUT through air discharge for discharge.
Static energy entering the interior of the equipment may cause interference. The qualification of the EUT can be determined by monitoring its working status.

Iv. Testing Process
1. Place the EUT on the test table as per the standard requirements;
2. Air discharge and contact discharge were respectively carried out on the EUT;
3. Discharge the horizontal coupling plate and the vertical coupling plate;
4. Monitor the working status of the EUT throughout the process to determine if there are any functional abnormalities or faults.
5. Record the test results and issue a compliance report.
